The Modi government has approved four new semiconductor plants in Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh, with a total investment of ₹4,594 crore. Announcing the decision, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said this takes the total number of approved semiconductor projects in the country to ten. The move aims to boost chip production in India and reduce dependence on imports, marking a big step towards self-reliance in technology.
Ashwini Vaishnaw said that this investment in the semiconductor sector will not only enhance technological capacity but also strengthen the vision of Digital India. Under these projects, modern production units will be set up, reducing the country’s dependence on foreign nations in sectors like electronics, automobiles, and defense. He also emphasized that these projects will create new local employment opportunities and accelerate industrial development.
In the Cabinet meeting, decisions were taken not only for the semiconductor sector but also for other important areas. Three major decisions were made in the meeting: First, the approval of four new semiconductor projects. Second, the green light to Lucknow Metro’s Phase-1B, which will strengthen the city’s transport infrastructure. Third, the approval of the Tato-II hydroelectric project to promote clean and green energy. These three decisions are considered steps that will strengthen the country’s infrastructure and energy security.
These semiconductor plants to be set up in Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh will not only provide new direction to local industries but also strengthen the technological supply chain. This will lead to industrial expansion in these states and bring direct benefits to the economy. This investment of Rs 4,594 crore will also play an important role in regional development and job creation. Experts believe that such projects will help place India more effectively on the global technology map.
